Last month I started coaching a team of advisors, two men and a younger woman named Meg. As I read through each of their welcome kits it became immediately apparent that the two men were very progressive, making sure they were balancing their time and lives while building a quality practice. Meg on the other hand was overworking herself, sacrificing her family time and rarely if ever taking vacation.
While this was just the first call, I knew I had to do something different. I started by explaining my process and then suggested we start with Meg. I asked my first question “Meg, how long can you keep up this pace?” Bulls eye, I hit a nerve, and she immediately began to cry.
I could see from her paperwork and the feedback from her partners that Meg would never be able to improve her practice until she started to take care of herself first. She was still working off the “Olde Protocol” he who works the longest and hardest wins. I had to shock her into making some immediate changes which worked.
While I wish this was a unique situation it’s not. I can’t tell you how many female financial advisors especially working Mom’s feel the need to put in more hours and work harder than their peers and all they are doing is working themselves into the ground.
If you are a female advisor who does too much and works too many hours (you know who you are), if you are a working mother finding limited time for your kids each day, if you are a female advisor who feels guilty taking time off even when you are sick then listen up.
These few words if you choose to embrace them will have the single greatest impact on the growth of your business,
SLOW DOWN, TAKE TIME OFF AND BE GOOD TO YOURSELF FIRST.
The moment you begin to put yourself first everything else will start to fall into place. You will immediately begin prioritizing what really needs to be done, you will be more motivated knowing you have time for yourself, your peers and partners will start showing you more respect simply because you are respecting yourself. All of this will convert to better business, happier kids and a healthier woman who is excited and energized each and every day.
